Building a strong vocabulary is one of the best ways to improve your performance on the IELTS exam. Whether you want a higher band score or simply wish to communicate more fluently in English, expanding your vocabulary is key. In this blog post, we’ll explore simple and effective strategies to help you improve your vocabulary for the IELTS exam. From reading regularly to using online tools and practicing with sample materials, these tips will get you going towards success. Start implementing them today, and see your vocabulary grow!

Ways to improve your IELTS Vocabulary

Read Regularly:

Reading is a great way to learn new words. Make it a habit to read newspapers, magazines, books, and online articles. Reading different materials and genres will expose you to a variety of words and phrases. Try to understand new words from context and note them down for future reference.

Keep a Vocabulary Journal:

Whenever you find a new word, write it down in a notebook or a digital tool. Include its definition, part of speech, and an example sentence to help you remember the word. Review your journal regularly to reinforce your learning.

Use Flashcards:

Flashcards are an effective way to memorize new words. Write the word on one side and the definition on the other. Review them regularly to help with retention. You can also make learning fun by playing word games with your friends.

Use Online-Vocabulary Resources:

There are many online tools available to help you build your vocabulary. Vocabulary-building websites and apps, online dictionaries, and thesauruses can provide word meanings, synonyms, and example sentences to enhance your understanding.

Watch English Movies and TV Shows:

Watching English-language contents help you learn new words in context. Pay attention to how words are used in conversations, and try to use them in your own speaking and writing.

Practice with IELTS Materials:

Use IELTS sample tests, books, and online resources to familiarize yourself with the types of vocabulary used in the exam. This will help you understand commonly used words and phrases and how they appear in different sections of the test.

Use New Words in context:

Practice using new words in sentences and conversations. This will reinforce your learning and help you remember the words.

Focus on Common IELTS Topics

Becoming familiar with common IELTS topics can significantly improve your score by enhancing your vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence. By practicing with materials related to frequent themes like health, education, technology, and the environment, you’ll become an expert at recognizing key vocabulary and ideas. This allows you to read and listen more efficiently, making it easier to answer questions accurately.

In the Writing and Speaking sections, familiarity with these topics will make it easier to generate ideas quickly, organize your thoughts, and use relevant vocabulary effectively, helping you produce higher-quality responses.

Additionally, being prepared for the types of topics that may appear on the exam can reduce anxiety and improve your time management. You’ll be more confident in discussing these topics in the Speaking section and more efficient in reading and listening under time constraints. Overall, regularly practicing with IELTS topics gives you the tools to perform at your best, increasing your chances of achieving a higher score.

Globalization: International trade, travel, and tourism

Family and Relationships: Marriage, parenting, and family dynamics

It’s important to note that these are not the only topics that may appear on the IELTS, and that the questions themselves can vary widely within each topic.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most widely recognized tests for assessing English language proficiency. While it is accepted by many institutions and employers worldwide, understanding both its advantages and potential limitations is crucial. This blog explores some of the key flaws identified in the IELTS exam, including issues related to cultural bias, test-taking skills, and limited feedback. If you’re planning to take the IELTS, or are considering it as a standard for measuring your language skills, it’s essential to be aware of these factors before making your decision.

Although widely acknowledged as a reliable measure of English proficiency for non-native speakers, the IELTS also presents some potential flaws that have been identified:

Limited cultural diversity: The test is primarily designed for people familiar with Western culture, which may disadvantage test-takers from other cultural backgrounds.

Limited language variety: By focusing solely on four language skills-reading, writing, listening, and speaking-, the assessment may not provide a comprehensive evaluation of all linguistic capabilities.

Limited validity: Some experts have questioned the validity of the IELTS test, arguing that it may not accurately reflect a test-taker’s language abilities in real-life situations.

Limited test-taking skills: Success in the IELTS test requires specific strategies, such as time management, note-taking, and answering multiple-choice questions, which may not be familiar to all test-takers

Limited accessibility: The test is not available in all locations, which may be a challenge for test-takers who need to travel long distances to take the exam.

Limited feedback: The IELTS test does not provide detailed feedback on test-takers’ performance, which limits opportunities for improvement.

Cultural Diversity in the IELTS Exam

Being aware of the limited cultural diversity in the IELTS exam can help you better prepare for reading and listening sections, which may feature Western cultural references. If you’re from a non-Western background, it’s important to understand that certain topics might assume familiarity with Western customs, lifestyles, and terminology. Focusing your practice on these cultural nuances-such as common Western references, idioms, and examples-can help you approach these sections with greater ease and confidence.

Limited Feedback and How to Address it

Understanding the potential flaw of limited feedback in the IELTS allows you to take proactive steps in your preparation. Since the IELTS doesn’t offer detailed feedback after the exam, consider using self-assessment tools or seeking personalized feedback from a tutor to identify areas of improvement. This approach will help you track your progress and continue refining your skills, ensuring you’re not left in the dark about your performance.

Conclusion

It’s important to note that, despite these flaws, the IELTS remains widely used and accepted as a measure of English language proficiency. Test-takers should also consider other factors, such as test format, cost, and test center location, when deciding which English proficiency exam to take.

While many IELTS candidates focus on the primary skills tested in the exam, developing underrated skills can give you a significant edge.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most reputable assessments ever developed and is trusted by government and educational organizations around the world to ensure that individuals possess the required level of English proficiency. The exam is administered in 140 countries, and 3 million people take the test annually. Needless to say, a lot of preparation materials have been created to help eager candidates. While these materials are very helpful, we would like to share some additional skills that candidates can work on in order to improve their score.

Why is Paraphrasing Important

Paraphrasing means choosing different words that have the same or similar meaning. The IELTS test composition relies heavily on this tactic to assess language proficiency. Mastering paraphrasing will help you excel in the listening and reading modules, as it helps you understand that some words, phrases, or sentences mean essentially the same thing. Similarly, using synonyms in the writing and speaking modules to avoid repetition will help you achieve a higher score.

How to Study Paraphrase for IELTS

Study words in groups with similar meanings. Visit a website like thesaurus.com and enter a word that you would like to know more about. We suggest choosing adjectives, as these types of words can significantly elevate your speaking and writing abilities. Then, depending on how you learn, you could design a game that involves matching the synonyms. To replicate the experience of speaking or writing on the exam, write sentences using the words you have just learned.

The Value of Correct Spelling

If we were writing this article 10 years ago, spelling would not have been on our list. However, with the introduction of new technology – including spell check, texting in short form, and even voice-to-text programs – we notice many of our students no longer value the lost art of correct spelling. Despite modern conveniences, you could lose significant points on the exam if you overlook this. To avoid throwing away marks, candidates must commit to using words in their full and correct form each and every time they write. In addition, you should practice commonly misspelled English words.

Not to mention, correct spelling will help you infinitely in the future when filling out forms, writing notes, or texting your boss!

Familiarity with Sentence Structure

In English, sentences are typically structured with a subject-verb-object order, where the subject performs the action of the verb, and the object receives the action. Simple sentences may consist of just a subject and a verb, while more complex sentences include additional elements such as objects, complements, and adverbs to provide more detail. Sentences can be expanded using conjunctions to connect clauses, forming compound or complex sentences. Modifiers like adjectives and adverbs are used to provide additional description or context. Sentence structures can vary in length and complexity depending on the desired meaning or tone.

Simply put, once you learn the pattern, you can use it for anything!

The Ability to Engage

Being engaging means keeping people interested and involved when you talk or write. It’s about sharing ideas in a clear, lively way that makes others want to listen, respond, or join in. Engaging people use good communication, ask questions, and connect with their audience.

Being engaging in conversation or writing can significantly enhance the perception of your language skills. When you actively participate and maintain an interesting flow, it shows that you can express ideas clearly and respond with relevant details, highlighting your fluency and command of vocabulary. Engaging speakers or writers also demonstrate the ability to adapt their language to the context, using varied sentence structures, tone, and vocabulary, which signals a deeper understanding of the language. This ability to keep others interested and involved suggests not only that you are proficient, but also that you can communicate effectively, making your language skills appear stronger and more sophisticated.

A person with an engaging personality is someone who is friendly, lively, and easy to talk to. They make others feel comfortable and interested by being attentive, positive, and genuinely curious about others. Their warmth and enthusiasm draw people in, and they often keep conversations fun. Showing enthusiasm and using positive body language also helps make interactions more lively and inviting – and can result in a better score!

Patience, the Most Underrated Skill

A patient person can perform better on an exam by staying calm and focused throughout the test. Patience allows them to carefully read and understand each question, reducing the likelihood of making hasty mistakes. They can manage their time effectively, not rushing through sections and allowing themselves enough time to think through difficult questions. Patience also helps them stay composed when faced with challenging questions, enabling them to think clearly and solve problems without getting frustrated. This thoughtful approach leads to better performance and a higher likelihood of success.

To improve patience during a test, practice mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing to stay calm and focused. Manage your time wisely by pacing yourself, ensuring you don’t rush through questions. Stay positive and remind yourself that taking your time to think through each question carefully will lead to better results.

Shift Your Focus

In conclusion, while many IELTS candidates focus on the primary skills tested in the exam, developing underrated skills like paraphrasing, spelling, sentence structure, engagement, and patience can give you a significant edge. Mastering paraphrasing enhances your ability to comprehend and express ideas effectively, while correct spelling ensures that you don’t lose valuable marks. Understanding sentence structure improves both your written and spoken responses, making them more coherent and sophisticated. Being engaging allows you to connect with your audience, highlighting your language fluency, while patience ensures you approach the exam calmly and thoughtfully, avoiding rushed mistakes. By focusing on these often-overlooked skills, you can boost your confidence and performance on the IELTS, ultimately increasing your chances of achieving a higher score.

One of the most overlooked, yet useful strategies, that should be employed by candidates studying for the IELTS exam is studying using topics and themes. In fact, IELTS frequently reuses topics and ideas. Studying these subjects will not only give you a heads up, this will also give you much needed confidence on test day.

IELTS Topics for Reading and Listening

Test takers will find that subjects used on the reading and listening sections of the exam will become progressively less familiar. On the listening section for example, Parts 1, 2 and 3 will involve everyday situations related to work, socialising, or education. Part 4, however, involves an academic topic that you won’t really know anything about beforehand. Your ability to correctly answer questions about unfamiliar subject matter will show a higher level of language proficiency and will result in a much higher band score.

The reading section is much the same in that the content progresses from more regular pieces of text that involve common types of readings into more scientific articles. The Academic and General versions of the exam are different due to the fact that the reading skills needed for Academic purposes are different.

Topics for Speaking and Writing

Luckily, the topics selected for the speaking and writing sections don’t tend to involve as many academic subjects, as it can be hard to talk at length about these types of things if you aren’t familiar with them. Also, there are lots of clever ways that you can tell the examiner that you don’t have much experience with the subject. This will prompt the examiner to move on to a new point, allowing you to better demonstrate your language skills.

For students, the fear of receiving a task involving a topic that they are unfamiliar with can be a major roadblock in becoming confident enough to attempt the exam. While IELTS exams are fully created to ensure that each and every test taker with excellent language skills can do well, those with lesser abilities can benefit by preparing strategically according to commonly used topics and subjects.

Preparing for IELTS the CIBL Way

Our Clearly IELTS Online Preparation Program has been created with this often overlooked aspect of studying in mind. Lessons are grouped into common IELTS themes so that students can explore the topics fully in order to be fully prepared to receive them on the exam. This includes trying sample tasks related to the subject, learning new vocabulary and gathering ideas for the speaking and writing sections.

Get Social

IELTS exams are modern and take into account relevant social issues. Depending on how politically engaged you are, you may not have considered how you feel about these issues, and you may not have many examples to bring to the table during a discussion with the examiner or when writing an essay. Sadly, this lack of knowledge will not reflect well on your language skills.

Instead, candidates should review commonly employed social issues on the IELTS exam so that they are aware of problems that exist, how they may be solved, and consider how these issues relate to their own lives and situations in their home country. With this, a 250 word essay will flow with ease!

Strategically Build Your Vocabulary

Another major problem that IELTS candidates encounter is that they simply do not have the language to discuss more complicated topics in detail, or, to understand a lengthy written article. Certainly, you can’t study every word in the English language, but you can study key terms and phrases related to subject matter that you are highly likely to encounter.

What to Do if You’re Not Familiar With the Subject

As the exam is designed to do this, candidates can expect to encounter something that they are not familiar with on the exam, however, following these pointers will ensure that you stay strong and don’t lose confidence or waste time.

Take a guess and move on: keep in mind that some questions are designed to be nearly impossible to answer. This is how exam writers ensure that band scores accurately reflect your language abilities. Use your time on questions that you’re more likely to get right.

Look for clues: oftentimes you can learn more about an unknown word by looking at the language used around it. Is the unknown word a noun or verb? Is it descriptive? Does it sound positive or negative?

When you encounter a task that uses a difficult subject for you, be confident and know that the text will explain the subject matter enough for you to answer the questions.

Look at the questions first so that you can focus on finding the answers and not understanding everything about the text.

In conclusion, while the most difficult questions are designed to challenge those with high-level language skills, candidates with average skills can score higher by reviewing these types of subjects as part of the preparation process.

People all over the globe are learning English as an additional language for many different reasons. However, without a prior knowledge of basic English structure, grammar, and vocabulary, learning the language can be an exhausting long journey, especially for adults. As many learners are usually preparing to take a language assessment, they overlook the one most important feature assessors look for: control over the language.

When attempting an IELTS speaking test, for example, assessors evaluate:

Topic development: should be logical and easy to follow

Use of idiomatic language: should be appropriately used to match the context’s meaning

Use of a wide range of structures flexibly: should switch easily between grammatical structures to deliver precise meanings

Use a wide range of pronunciation features to express your ideas: should use tone and intonation to add life to the language

All the above features should be done with the least effort to prove that you have immersed yourself in the language and its culture, and that your brain can process thoughts almost the same way it processes your mother tongue language.

Is that even possible? The easy answer to this is “YES!”, but it needs to start with a desire to learn, dedication, and consistency. If you haven’t been successful in improving your English skills, moving to the next level, or getting a better score in a language assessment for months or years, it is time to accept the fact that what you have been doing is not enough. Below are some tips and tricks that can help you embrace the language faster.

Disable the Cable

It’s time to unsubscribe from your mother tongue. Until you achieve your English goals, we advise that you stop watching movies or TV shows in which people speak your mother tongue language. Instead, watch English movies, shows, and news. This might be stressful at the beginning as it will take you out of your comfort zone. However, it will improve your vocabulary and awareness of idioms and will enhance your listening-to-details skills. Furthermore, you will become more aware of cultural norms in North America.

Skip the Subtitles

English movies are great for increasing your exposure to the language. There are hundreds of genres that you can choose from according to your interests. If your English listening skills are not advanced enough, you can also start with cartoons, nothing is wrong with that! However, there is one rule that you must follow to learn the language faster; you must turn off subtitles written in your mother tongue language. If you are struggling to understand, we suggest that you add English subtitles, which will help you become a faster reader.

Tune In

Now that you have achieved a learning-friendly environment at home, it’s time to do the same while hitting the road. Whether you are driving or taking the bus, try not to listen to stored-media on your phone and opt for English radio stations. Even if you feel that you don’t understand what you hear, eventually over time, you will become a better listener and you will learn to enjoy English music and songs. If you hear a song that you really like, search for it online, find the lyrics and try to memorize the words, so you can sing along next time you hear it on the radio (only do that if you’re in your car, never on the bus!).

Reset your Phone

Many English learners set their smartphones to their mother tongue language. This needs to stop. Change your phone’s language to English to get your eyes used to the English alphabet. Text your friends in English and improve your spelling skills with the spelling check feature. Skip short versions of words and write in full sentences.

Hit the Local Library

Visit your local library and borrow an English book. Depending on your language skills, pick a book that is not too easy but is still challenging. If adult novels are too hard, for example, pick a novel from the youth section or even a chapter book from the children section. Anything you read in English is better than reading nothing at all. This also applies to magazines and newspapers. The more you read, the faster you will become. Soon enough, you will be used to proper sentence structure, and you will be able to detect mistakes in your own writing.

Read Aloud

When reading novels, choose a paragraph every now and then to read aloud. Reading loudly as if you are talking to a crowd enhances your confidence levels and helps you become a better speaker. When reading English aloud, make sure to relax your lips and curve your tongue in a smile shape in which the sides of your tongue touch your back teeth. This is the normal tongue position that native English speakers have while they speak. This will reduce your accent and make you sound more natural.

Listen to your Surroundings

When on the bus, at a coffee shop, or while waiting in line at the grocery store, pay attention to your surroundings and what people say to each other. You can learn colloquial vocabulary that you won’t usually hear on the news or read in books. If you hear a strange phrase like “way to go” or “catch you later”, write them down and check their meanings. Then, practice using those phrases in everyday conversation.

Taking an English course is a great way to enhance your language skills, but if you do not take the extra steps outside the class to become engrossed in the language and its culture, it might take you a long time to reach your goals.

More organizations and educational institutions require IELTS as a proof of English language proficiency. Meanwhile, the number of test centres have increased in numbers around the world and so do online and print resources. Since IELTS’ fees are relatively high, most candidates opt for those, free or almost free, resources as an affordable study option.

Unfortunately, relying on such resources comes with a number of risks. The time and stress of manually searching and compiling information about the test, getting stuck with sample responses that may or may not demonstrate the score you are aiming for, and an endless queue of videos to watch here and there are all factors to frustration that most likely result in confusion and low scores.

If you ever find yourself lost among the endless IELTS resources offered online and in print, you might want to consider enrolling in an IELTS prep course. A well designed prep course, like the one offered here at the Canadian Institute for Blended Learning, comes with great advantages that can save you time and money and elevate your score.

Let’s take a look at what a good prep course should include:

Detailed activity reviews

While it is true that taking multiple practice tests can help you with your IELTS training, your score will not be improved if you repeatedly approach the test without a strategy. You might take thousands of practice tests only to score 5 or 6 in all of them. In that case, having a higher or lower score only depends on how familiar you are with the topic in the reading or listening texts. This is where a program with detailed activity reviews comes in handy. As you go over every task’s review, you will become aware of your mistakes, why you made them, and how to avoid them. Reviews can teach you a variety of strategies from which you can choose the ones that match your abilities and strengths.

Relevant grammar lessons

A critical part of the IELTS scoring system evaluates your control over the language and your ability to use a variety of language structures to deliver precise and meaningful sentences. Therefore, we highly recommend a program with extensive grammar practice that is directly related to the IELTS exam questions. Whether it’s a piece of reading you are trying to understand, a speaking question you need to promptly respond to, or a letter that you need to write, using correct grammatical structures is a must if you plan to score higher than 6 on the speaking or writing sections.

Vocabulary

It is absolutely normal to feel more confident talking about familiar topics in English. On the other hand, you can’t choose the topic you want to talk or write about on the IELTS exam. For that reason, it’s important that you familiarize yourself with advanced vocabulary words related to IELTS themes. A program that offers practice with these topics will help expand your vocabulary strategically. Use new vocabulary daily, so you are able to use them spontaneously on the test.

Feedback and Support

Understanding your mistakes and trying to fix them is, for most, is the best learning approach. However, it’s not easy to achieve this alone. Always look for a program with instructional support. As you practice for your IELTS test, you need a teacher that can guide you, point out your mistakes, and give you a chance to fix them by yourself.

In conclusion, an IELTS prep course that includes all of the above can save you time and money because you will not be spending hours looking for resources online and feeling lost. When all the resources you need are in one place, you can focus on what is important to you, and your language skills will significantly improve. As a result, you will get the score you want, and you won’t need to repeat the test and pay the expensive fees again.

Diversity is encouraged in Canada, and professionals from all over the world are welcomed into the Canadian workforce. While your are expected to be profiecient at your job and have knowledge of the industry you are applying to work in, it’s important that you demonstrate outstanding language skills that will eliminate any doubts your employer may have about your ability to communicate effectively. Therefore, it is extremely critical that you enhance your language skills in order to be a successful candidate in the competitive job application process.

If you are not sure where to start, try the tips below.

1. Prepare for the IELTS exam

If you are trying to secure a job offer in Canada, your first step should be achieving a high score on a language proficiency test. You might have already applied for the IELTS exam for immigration purposes, but if you are not happy with your score, do not be discouraged. Good preparation should get you a higher score. We encourage you to try our IELTS Intermediate course which features an inclusive overview of the exam and thousands of practice activities, tips, and tricks. It also features important aspects of North American culture relating to a variety of subjects.

Consider any language training you pursue as a future investment since the results will remain effective beyond your test score. For example, to successfully score high in the IELTS exam, you need to have a considerable amount of complex vocabulary words for a variety of topics that you can easily retain and incorporate into your speech. You also need a good understanding of English grammar which lets you control the language easily as you jump from one topic to another. Once practiced adequately, this type of knowledge will help you perform better beyond the test event.

“The language you are learning to score high in the IELTS exam will help you communicate better at your new job in Canada.”

2. Learn trade specific phrases

One thing to keep in mind about IELTS is that it prepares you for general daily interactions. Besides having a good control over the language, you need to impress your potential employers with some native expressions related to the field you are applying for. Your good IELTS score will not rank you high in an interview if you are not familiar with the language corpus of your trade.

For example, if you are an IT professional with ten years of experience from a non-English-speaking country, preparing for IELTS itself is not expose you to the specific langauge used colloquially in your industry. In a job interview, employersor skilled HR representatives will ask questions related to detailed IT responsibilities. These will be unlike the general questions you had to answer during your IELTS exam. If you were not able to explain specific duties and share past experiences using the language they expect to hear, you would simply not get the job.

Before applying for a job, make sure you:

investigate corpora related to your profession, and identify words and phrases related to your experience.

list all your job duties and achievements, and practice talking about them using the words and phrases you have learned.

repeat this practice daily until you are able to retain the new vocabulary words naturally without pausing.

3. Learn some Canadian idioms

Idioms are expressions used in precise situations. Idioms are often used by native speakers naturally and are usually considered a sign of fluency when used by non-native speakers, even if the listener only picks up on this subtly.

Using idioms is mainly helpful in a job interview since they are not commonly used in a cover letter or a resume. Look for idioms that you can use during your interview and memorise a couple of them, but make sure you do not over use them.

Idioms help you describe specific situations and feelings using the least amount of words. They also enrich your language and make you sound like a native speaker. Furthermore, they make you feel more confident when communicating with others.

Examples:

Corner the market: use when describing a company that dominates a particular industry or niche.

In a nutshell: use to introduce a summary.

Safe bet: describes something that is a sure thing.

Brick-and-mortar: describes a business that is well established but less flexible. A bricks and clicks company refers to one that meets both descriptions.

Around the clock: means working 24 hours, without stopping

Think outside the box: refers to having creative solutions, instead of common ones.

4. Complete your resume

A resume is more than just a compilation of your education and work experience. The way you design your resume and present your experience indicates a lot about your personal and professional aptitudes.

Here are some important considerations for creating your resume:

Make sure you follow the resume conventions of the country you are applying in. A Canadian resume, for example, looks much different than a resume used in The United Arab Emirates. By doing so, you will indicate that you are aware of Canadian working culture.

When writing your job descriptions, focus on what you have achieved, not what you have done. Only list the most important responsibilities that are directly related to the job you are applying for. Let’s take the IT example again. Compare the descriptions below of an IT specialist work experience. Which one do you think is more effective in a resume?

If you are not familiar with the language used to describe your job duties in English, explore your career through Canada Job Bank “Explore a Career” service, and read the skills section to find specific phrases and terminologies used to describe your duties.

Never include something in your resume that you haven’t actually done. This would create a big embarrassment later if you were asked to talk about it in the interview.

Make sure that your resume is free of spelling and grammar errors.

5. Write a cover letter

Your cover letter is the first thing the employer is going to look at in the application process. If your cover letter is written poorly, your resume will be overlooked. Use the cover letter to highlight work experiences that directly relate to the job you are applying for. It also gives you the chance to describe how hiring you is a smart decision.

Here are some things to consider when preparing your cover letter:

Your cover letter should not be longer than three paragraphs.

Use the personal pronoun “I” when describing outstanding professional and interpersonal skills.

Match the items discussed in your cover letter with the job requirements. For example, if having a membership with a specific association is required, mention how you will achieve this.

Invest some time searching the company’s history and mission statement. In the last paragraph show how excited you are to work in the company and relate the reasons to the company’s mission statement.

End your cover letter with a professional closure (e.g, Sincerely, Best regards).

Always sign your cover letter.

Make sure your cover letter is free of spelling and grammar mistakes.

6. Ace your video interview

It’s a great accomplishment to get a job interview; it means that you have succeeded in presenting yourself to the employer through your cover letter and resume. Now, it’s time to impress the employer and receive a job offer. Remember that the employer has already believed that you might be the perfect candidate according to your resume, and the last thing you want is a disappointed employer at the end of the interview.

Like every other step in the application process, you need to be well-prepared before attending an interview. Preparing for the interview helps you present your actual self while being relaxed and confident.

“The employer is as excited as you are to meet a successful candidate.”

Here are some tips you might want to take into consideration when preparing for a job interview:

Research as much informaiton as you can about the company because you will most likely be asked “why are you interested in working for our company?” Be prepared to answer this question confidently with actual facts.

Review the terminologies and idioms that you have prepared and make sure you know how to use them.

Prepare a one minute speech responding to the request: “tell me about yourself.” Exclude overly personal information (like family history, country, religion, spiritual beliefs, number of children, etc.). Instead, focus on your education, work experience, and professional and personal qualities.

Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses that are directly related to the job. Practice talking about them with detailed examples. Yes, you do need to describe the details if the employer asks you to elaborate on a specific claim. For example, if you say that one of your weaknesses is handling stress, you should be ready to follow up with an example of the type of scenario that you find challenging.

Prepare a list of some personal interests and practice talking about them. Canadian employers also like to get an idea of your personality, inaddition to skills. Pick the one you enjoy the most and talk in detail. Make sure, however, to keep your professional tone while doing so.

Always have a list of questions ready to ask your interviewers during and at the end of the interview. After all, the interview is a two-way discussion, and the atmosphere should be natural and friendly.

Since most job interviews, nowadays, are conducted virtually, here are some important things to consider:

Be punctual. Never arrive or log into the meeting late.

Make sure you sit in a bright room with a simple background.

Dress up professionally for the interview from top to bottom. In other words, do not wear a dress shirt with pyjama pants.

Maintaining eye contact is a very important gesture in a job interview. Virtually, most interviewees fail to achieve this because they look at the interviewer on the screen. To achieve good eye contact, you must look directly at the camera when answering questions. You do not have to stare at the computer camera the whole time, but make sure you do when it’s your turn to talk.

In conclusion, securing a job in Canada requires an investment to improve your language and communication skills. The more time you put into each step described above, the more confident you will become. This confidence you gained will reflect on your speech and performance in a job interview and will help you be the successful candidate.

Many people looking for jobs in Canada might look for certain types of work that do not require much interaction with the public or other coworkers. A newcomer with developing English abilities might prefer to work in such positions to avoid the anxiety associated with socialization. Although the opposite type of work might be challenging to some foreign workers in North America, it definitely has a great number of benefits.

Benefits of English Speaking Jobs

1. English speaking jobs PAY MORE, relatively!

In general, jobs that involve a high level of human interaction pay more compared to jobs that only require minimal one-on-one interactions. Interacting professionally with customers or clients, answering their questions, offering help, and handling transactions are all assets when it comes to a job that puts you on the front line. A job that requires you to make extra effort to retain customers and promote the business can pay you more. For example, according to the Canadian Job Bank, the average wage of cleaning workers is $16.00 per hour, while home care support workers receive an average pay of $20 per hour. Without underestimating the hard working conditions for cleaning workers, a home support worker needs to have extraordinary communication skills to deal with vulnerable seniors who naturally love to chat.

Another example is tailors, who need to have specific detailed conversations with clients to be able to get the job done. According to the Canadian Job bank, tailors in the Vancouver area of B.C. get paid around $16.10 per hour, which is a decent number compared to sewing machine operators who receive only $14.00 per hour.

2. English speaking jobs help you learn English

A second language is learned with lots of effort, but it takes a greater effort to be maintained. An English language speaker who scored a 6 in IELTS might find it hard to maintain that level of language proficiency if he/she takes a non-English speaking job for a long period of time. A number of our students reported that their ability to freely express their mind in English has declined after staying in such jobs for a long period of time. Our best advice to newcomers is to find a job that exposes them to the maximum amount of English and that requires substantial involvement with customers. Moreover, working in a solitary environment often only intensifies the feelings of isolation that new immigrants often experience.

Group of young creative people sitting together discussing ideas on digital tablet

An English speaking job provides immense opportunities for you to not only to maintain but also improve your English. Here are some examples of how you can improve your English in an English-speaking job.

Learn new vocabulary and phrases while participating in casual conversations with your coworkers during breaks.

Improve your critical thinking skills in English as you follow instructions form your boss or supervisor.

Enhance your public speaking skills in English while explaining products or promoting business services to customers.

Practice your writing skills while completing reports about incidents that took place during your shift.

3. English speaking jobs help you fit in the community

Language and culture are inseparable. There are great things that you can learn about the culture of your new community by working in a diverse socially demanding work environment. Most businesses in North America value their multicultural teams and progressive work environments. Out of a growing need to recruit globally, many businesses have instituted regulations and policies to ensure that all staff members work in a safe environment in which they can celebrate their traditions and appreciate the differences of others. Over time, Canadian working culture has evolved to embrace these notions. As a result, newcomers are respected and encouraged to share their values while being given ample opportunities to learn about the work culture and fit in.

Beyond a doubt, the diversity of a workplace reflects the cultural diversity of the communities they serve. Whether it’s a nursing home, a restaurant, a retail store, or an office, there is always a unifying organizational culture. Understanding that culture at work makes you more confident while interacting with others who do not share your background or values.

“There are great things that you can learn about the culture of your new community by working in a diverse socially demanding work environment.”

Take advantage of every situation at work to learn something new. Do not limit your observations to language. Monitor your colleagues’ body language as well. Observe how they value their personal space, how they maintain eye contact, and how they dress, sit, or stand in different situations.

In conclusion, do not hesitate to apply for a job that takes you out of your comfort zone and puts you on the front line where you have to interact with many individuals each day using your second language. The outcomes are definitely worthwhile.
The post The Benefits of Speaking English at Work first appeared on Canadian Institute for Blended Learning.
